  • Compromise

    June 18th, 2018

It’s four o’clock in the morning and for the love of me, I do not have the words to pen down. My fingers are numb and I don’t like this pencil.

I pick a pen but then it’s blue and I feel like writing in black, casting away demons that are not there, but seem to hover above this notebook.

My phone lights up “Hi, I know you’re awake.”

I switch it off and walk to the window. The shutter is dusty and I struggle to open it without drawing the curtain. It’s four o’clock, who’s awake and up and about at such a time?

‘Macho biggy’ is strolling on our compound, pissing at every plant, you’d think this was the feline’s kingdom! I walk to the sitting room and sit on the floor. I should never have stated the truth yesterday…he was mad that I was supporting a team he felt and knew was inferior. “You don’t know a thing about football,” he said. I told him “This is the year of the underdog. All the big names and big teams you know about will surprise you…it’s the teams that the world never thinks about that will sail to the finals.”

He said “yeah right and I am the recipient of the NYS funds.”

I smiled and attempted to laugh at this, but then his friend simply said, “she may not know a thing about football, but she knows a lot about people, and football is about people- more so, it’s about watching people play.”

He turned to his friend and I saw the guy shrink. I smiled at this and the little box in my mind remained unchecked, a defeat, a victory…I have no clue, and it felt like the world was suddenly revealed to me.

“It’s never the big things, it’s always the little things…the little things.” I looked at the wall clock and then walked back to the bedroom, thirty minutes of aimless wandering did me some good, but even then…I still had no words. So, I found myself dreaming of days long gone and the one thing that I swore I’d never do when it came to writing at four in the morning “compromise.”

    I wrote about him.

I wrote about his impending defeat.

I wrote about everything that I wanted to say that he’d never listen to, and then, I burned it! I wrote because it’s the one thing that I am certain of…well, aside from having this life to live.

  • Things I look forward to this weekend

    June 14th, 2018

Hey, so…the 2018 World Cup is officially on today! I’m excited and cannot wait to watch the games and especially three things:

    1. The line up
    2. The line up
    3. The Line up

It also happens to be Father’s Day weekend :-), and here’s to all the Dads.

    HAPPYFATHER'S DAY!

I’m looking forward to getting some much needed sleep and drinking lots of tea.

I’ve got a few project meetings to attend but all in all, I’m so glad that it’s a long weekend and cannot wait to catch up on my reading. I’ve got these three books waiting for me:

    Have an awesome weekend!

  • My Song

    June 13th, 2018

I never set out to write this.

It’s like knowing you are an anchor to my sails, a fire in my soul, a wind that sways me.

    stocksnap.io

I never set out to tell the world about it,

But what consumes me every second of my waking life is a single thought,

and it is that somewhere…somehow, and at sometime, you held me dear.

It’s like dancing around a fire, walking on hot coal, singing to a storm…

It’s like being and not being, a whirlwind of thoughts, a flurry of emotions,

    fleeting emotions…

For three minutes…you are my wild love and nothing but chords and sweet melody!

  • Bookish Naughty List Book Tag

    June 12th, 2018

I came across this on Bree’s blog “In Love & Words” and since the book-tag fever is upon me, I couldn’t help but love her responses and wish to share mine!

    stocksnap.io

I don’t know what’ll come out of this but here’s to another cup of coffee! Naughty or Nice? Let’s see…

    1. Received an ARC and not reviewed it.
Yeah, I recently received two ARCs from a Publisher, and I read one and not the other.

    2. Have less than 60% feedback rating on NetGalley:
Nope! I’m currently at 89% and I intend to keep it that way. 🙂

    3. Rated a book on Goodreads and promised a full review was to come on your blog (and never did):
    Guilty!

    4. Folded down the page of a book:
Never! What kind of blasphemy is this?

    5. Accidentally spilled on a book:
Yes, and it was on my new copy of Atlas Shrugged!

    6. DNF a book this year:
Yes, there’s a book that I am struggling with, “The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell.”

Image result for the ragged trousered philanthropists

    7. Bought a book purely because it was pretty with no intention of reading it:
Well, forget the whole ‘don’t judge a book by it’s cover’ because who can resist a pretty cover?

    8. Read whilst you were meant to be doing something else :
ALL MY LIFE. Can I spill some tea?

Image result for spill the tea gif

I once carried a copy of Michael Connelly’s “The Poet” to a date! I was at Java waiting for my date to arrive. He came in, sat directly opposite me and watched me for ten minutes! He said “hi” and I was too engrossed trying to follow the trail of the Killer that I mumbled “oh, hi,” without making eye contact because I assumed that I had ten minutes before my date joined me.

Image result for oh no you didn't gif

He had to call me and it’s when I heard my phone ring that I set the book aside and looked up to see him smiling and seated right in front of me!

    9. Skim read a book:
I do this for course texts!

    10. Completely missed your Goodreads goal:
    Not yet.

    11. Borrowed a book and not returned it:
No. I make sure I return a book I’ve borrowed.

    12. Broke a book buying ban:
I have never imposed such harsh sanctions on myself.

    13. Started a review, left it for ages then forgot what the book was about:
Oh! What I’d give to experience such bliss, even for one book!

    14. Wrote in a book you were reading:
    Guilty!

    15. Finished a book and not added it to your Goodreads:
Yes, especially when I go on a romance binge! I can read up to four romance novels and once I’m good, I’ll simply sit back and continue reading the book I had first.

    Here’s to another great week!

    Have a good one!

    Leila

I was at the Lounge having my daily dose of coffee when he walked in. I didn’t have to look to know it was him. I heard the laugh, and then as he drew nearer, took in his cologne. He uses Hugo Boss, and that musky scent is unique. I didn’t look at him. I couldn’t. He took the seat next to me and sighed. He then told his friends, “Guys, meet Leila.” They looked at me, then him, then me again-and took the seats on the other side of the restaurant. I switched off my music player and put it inside my bag. Maxwell, looked as radiant as I recalled-only a little different. He was uncertain. We looked at each other, and then I smiled. He smiled at me and looked down at my hands. They were resting on the table. He reached for it. “That’s a nice rock you have there,” he said.

“I got it from a guy one Friday night.”

    “How did you get it?”

“He kissed me as he slipped it into my finger.”

    “How did that feel?”

    “Hot and cold.”

    “So, what did you do?”

“I left him standing there and went home. I slept it off and woke up like nothing happened. I have never seen the Guy, or thought of answering his messages and calls.”

“Why would you do that? Didn’t you want the ring?”

    “No.”

    “Did you love the guy?”

    “No.”

“Why did you kiss him then?”

“I kissed him, because he was the one.”

“The One- as in what you women think is Mr. Right?”

    “Yes.”

“Then why did you leave him and ignore him all this time?”

“It felt right. It still does.” Maxwell looked at me then sighed. “Enough with the games Leila! This is not a game! We are not on a chess board! This is real…I mean, look at me, look at me Leila!” I looked at him and smiled. He was in pain. I felt it.

    “You have no right Maxwell.”

    “Did you get my letter?”

    “Was it yours or mine?”

“I forgot you’re a smart mouth, I mean did you get the letter I wrote you?”

    “Yes, I did.”

“And, did you read it Leila?”

    “I didn’t have to.”

    “So, what are you saying?”

“I got the letter and I have never read it. I don’t think I ever will.”

    “Why?”

“I know what you wrote. I know what you’d say, so there’s no need reading it.”

“Do you love me Leila? At least tell me that.”

    “No, I don’t.”

“I have met so many people Leila, but none are as cold as you- and to think that all this time, you were maybe thinking of giving me a chance, it’s just sad that I love you for even not loving me. God! I am stupid. Here I am talking to you when I could be having a good time with my friends. Friends who think I’ve gone crazy looking for you, yet…you know what, I hope he’s worth it, I hope that sick bastard is worthy of your love!”

“I guess you are right Maxwell. I am sorry, maybe I will tell that sick bastard to take back his ring and go look for someone who will wear it everywhere she goes, even to bed.” He stopped at this and hit the table with his fists. He spilled my coffee and had the waitress come to our table. I looked at her and told her we were fine. His friends looked at me. They aimed their guns at me. If only eyes could heal, and not kill, then the world would be a better place. I looked at Maxwell who was staring outside the window. He fought back tears, by suppressing a laugh. Then he started laughing and said “I get it now.”

    “Do you really?”

“True life is lived when tiny changes occur.”

    “Leo Tolstoy.”

“With our thoughts we make the world.”

    “Buddha.”

    “I love you Leila.”

    “No, you don’t.”

    “How can you tell?”

“You haven’t died for it. You are still hiding the real you from me Maxwell, and until then, there’s nothing much you can do to prove otherwise.”

“Must you play this game of circles Leila? What more proof do you want?”

    “I don’t want proof.”

“Then for Chrissake! What do you want? Just tell me and I will do it!”

    “I want you.”

“But, I’m here! Can’t you see?”

    “No.”

“Leila! I am not your ex, and I will not do what he did. Just give me a chance to prove that I love you and let me be with you.”

“You were never my ex. I have never compared you to him. It’s you who has right now. You are Maxwell, and so much more. What I cannot stand is you doing your best to be some good guy, just perfect- but I don’t want perfect Maxwell, I want you. I want you to get angry when you are. I want you to lose it when you think I am pushing things too far. I want you to hold me like you own the most precious thing. I even want you to look at me, with that glistening look like you are unwrapping a gift-I have seen you do it, and for all that there’s more to you. I want you to know that in the next ten minutes I will want something different of you-and that you can deliver it all and much more. I am a roller-coaster, and I love it. Question is are you willing to get aboard and live or will you operate the control switch?”

    Day One

I found him on the first day. He was walking towards my table at the restaurant. The place was full except for the seat beside me. I cringed at the thought of sharing my table with someone, worse off a guy. What if I chewed too loudly? I wanted to sit in my corner and eat my food in peace, was that too much to ask for? I resigned myself to the fact that I did not own the restaurant and watched him settle in his seat. His knees knocked mine under the table and he mumbled ‘sorry.’ Typical Kenyan guy!

I found solace in my vegetable curry and rice five minutes later.

He ordered ugali and beef stew. He cleared his throat when he caught me staring at his food. “Hi, you want some of my food?”

    “No, thanks.”

“Well, nothing beats heavy lunch, I’m Jack by the way.”

    “Zora.”

    “Zora?”

    “Yes, Zora.”

“That’s a unique name, what does it mean? Coz, I swear, it’s the first time I have heard of it.”

    “It means dawn.”

“Okay, do you come here a lot?”

“Not really, once or twice a week.”

“It’s a great place. I work around and this is where I get most of my meals.”

“That’s great, I am looking forward to their coffee specials- they have one every Wednesday. You get two servings of whichever coffee special you order.”

    “Wednesday, that’s tomorrow, right?”

“Yes, it is.” We ate our food in silence. I wondered how he could work having eaten such a heavy lunch, but never dared to ask him. I paid my bill and left the restaurant. I left Jack eating. Have you ever met someone and felt as though you were made just for them? I was there by chance, and so was he. I had found him, but he didn’t seem found.

  • Updates on Writing and Reading

    June 9th, 2018

It’s been a week since I got home. However, the truth is, it’s been one month and one week since I wrote anything. When I say ‘anything’ here, I mean, writing to advance a plot or story that I have been working on. I am not bothered by the pace…I should be, but I’m not in the frame of mind to write and I knew I did the right thing by halting the release of Sifuna on May 26th.

What a way to start a post!

Well, have you ever made a decision that you were solely proud of?

I’ve never taken such a long time writing, editing and releasing a book as much as I have with this book. First, I had an idea, I tossed it about for three months, wrote a chapter or two and deleted it and had so many eBook cover changes that I finally decided to let it breathe!

On reading: I got down to Ready Player One by Ernest Cline because of this awesome conversation-> here. I’ll watch the movie!

Ready Player One by [Cline, Ernest]

I read the book in one sitting. Yes, not because it was as remarkable as the star ratings on Amazon, but because I found the 80’s reference too much to my liking and the writing faltered between utter fascination with unnecessary detailed descriptions. I’ll admit that I’m not a Gamer, so the fascination is lost on me, there were some parts where the writing seemed rather clumsy to me. So, here’s the deal…Spielberg’s got reigns of the movie and I am watching it! Ochieng…let’s toast to this “the movie’s gotta be way better than the book!”

I am still reading The Queen’s Fool by Philippa Gregory and cannot wait to finish reading it and get started on these titles!

    • Teen Trailblazers by Jennifer Clavert.

    • Priceless by Zygmunt Miloszeweski

    Priceless by [Miloszewski, Zygmunt]

So, there you have it…I’ll spend my Saturday reading and maybe drinking tea as I wait for my clothes to dry…I might pick up my pen and go over my drafts sometime next week and see where I go with writing.

    Have a great weekend!

  • Gentle

    June 7th, 2018

    Be gentle:

With the sick, the bleeding hearts, the weary souls, troubled minds and difficult people…and when it seems like the world has no end, be even more gentle with yourself.

A rock was once a grain.

  • Would You Rather Book Tag

    June 6th, 2018

I came across this awesome post on Melissa’s blog, Bookish Wanderer and had to share my thoughts! Check out her cool responses here

    stocksnap.io

    1. Would you rather have a friend lose your books or one who dog-ears them?

I cringe at both options, but instead of losing them…I’d rather come across one or two dog-ears! 😦

    2. Would you rather secretly love a book everyone else hates, or secretly hate a book everyone else loves?

Image result for sip tea gif
    Google

I received quite some backlash for not liking Twilight, so, I’d rather secretly hate a book everyone else loves…right after saying what it is about the book that bugs me!

    3. Would you rather be stuck on a very long plane or train ride without a book?

Definitely a plane ride. I can always have a great view or a conversation on a long train ride, SGR anyone?

    4. Would you rather have dinner with your favorite author or your favorite character?

Favorite character! Because, frankly speaking, an Author can be boring or not inclined to be socially chatty (I am) so, instead of facing that kind of disappointment, I’d rather have dinner with my favorite character!

    5. Would you rather date a character you have a crush on or your crush from real life?

No crushes for me here…but if it meant choosing, then yeah, a real life crush!

    6. Would you rather have your favorite book turned into a movie, or your favorite movie turned into a book?

The book is always better than the movie! Let’s not argue about that. I wouldn’t mind turning my favorite movie into a book 🙂

    7. Would you rather read a book with an annoying cliffhanger, or one where your favorite character is killed off?

Out with their heads! I’m all about tragedies because the Greeks showed that “hey, man is mortal!” so I wouldn’t mind saying goodbye to my favorite character. I hate cliffhangers and you’d wonder why I haven’t quit reading all those romance novels that leave me asking “did they end up together?”

    8. Would you rather lose the ability to read any new books, or the ability to reread books you’ve already read?

    Okay, this is brutal!

    Again, why?

    Pass!

    9. Would you rather live in a library or a bookstore?

    Library.

    10. Would you rather lose your place or get a paper cut every time you read a book?

Paper cut, at least then I could always fist bump everyone I meet!

    11. Would you rather have to always read in the dark, or always read books with tiny text?

Read in the dark. I already do this…and something about books with tiny text has me smiling already…PS: Currently reading The Queen’s Fool by Philippa Gregory.

    12. Would you rather read by a fireplace, or on the beach?

    Fireplace.

That’s all I’ve got for now!

    Have an awesome week!

  • Is it a crime to talk about a book you’re reading?

    June 5th, 2018

    You tell me!

Well, I am reading A Collar for Cerberus by Matt Stanley and it’s the first book I’ve come across by the author and let me tell you…I am engrossed. I even forgot to pick my deposit slip at the bank today because I was reading about the guy’s adventures. I am grateful to the nice lady for bringing it to my attention.

A Collar for Cerberus by [Stanley, Matt]Paperback: 332 pages, Publisher: Thistle Publishing (July 26, 2018)

Here’s the blurb I lifted off Amazon because I was too lazy to give you a summary:

    Never meet your heroes…
A naïve English graduate arrives in Greece seeking experience and perhaps an encounter with his literary hero: Nobel laureate and irascible old hell-raiser Irakles Bastounis. Agreeing to act as driver for Bastounis, the young man finds himself on a hectic, adventurous and always challenging tour of Greece’s wonders – an apprentice in how to live life to the fullest.
As the road trip progresses, the questions arise. Is Bastounis still an addict? Who is following him and why? Is he researching his final, much-anticipated novel? Who are the people he’s meeting along the way? And how far will one young man ultimately go in the name of experience?

I’ll admit that if it wasn’t for David Haviland and Thistle Publishing…I wouldn’t have heard of this book, or the author and now I am looking up his other nine books to get more of his prose.

I was intrigued by the title because of two things: one, I know based on Greek mythology, that Cerberus was Hade’s dog and had more than one head. His main job was to guard the realm of the dead to prevent anyone from leaving the underworld. Two, I already assumed that Bastounis, the great Author, had demons of his own that he was dealing with and I wanted to read about them.

There are snippets of gold in between the lines and any Writer or Reader would find themselves highlighting or saying an “amen” to some of them. So, I’ll share about three phrases okay?

“If you can’t write for yourself alone, you are finished.”

    “The greater art is living.”

“Education is now just another product to be packaged and advertised and bought. We learn nothing worthwhile unless we learn it alone.”

I am nowhere near halfway done with the book and I may be getting ahead of myself, but I love the prose so far and deep down it’s because I’ve always wanted to meet my favorite Writers!

Reading a book where a character meets his favorite author and discovers more about him is as close as I can get to meeting my own…so until then…let’s see where Mr. Stanely’s words will lead me!

PS: What book are you reading?
