  • Me As A Writer Tag

    August 18th, 2018

It’s Saturday  and I came across this fun tag on Victoria’s blog Be Careful of Books and I loved her responses. So, let’s get into it:

A flatlay with a laptop, a notepad, a smartphone and a mug of coffee
    Photography: Andrew Neel

    What do you write?

I write a variety of things from short stories to novels.

What do you mostly write about?

I write about life’s challenges and often make sure I mix up my characters. However, there’s always one who is playful that somehow makes light of a difficult situation.

What’s you favorite thing about writing?

The fact that I can create a world that’s either a mirror image of what I live in or sometimes that I can use words to make myself laugh, cry, get angry or swoon.

What/Who inspired you to start/keep writing?

Grief. My sister and I watched our Dad take his last breath and being a Daddy’s girl, I could not comprehend the drastic changes that came with his passing. I was nine years old and whenever I yearned to talk to him, I would write him a letter, tell him about school, our lives and I just kept writing.

I kept on writing because I realized that there were days I could act as though I had nothing to jot down but sometimes, I’d find myself waking up in the middle of the night, or noting things down- so I guess, I tried to shake it off, but the writing persisted.

Who’s your favorite character you’ve made up?

Ukweli. He’s a Seer, a Prince and the King’s brother in The Currents Series I published a while back. I love how conflicted he was but he stuck to his calling, I’m restless and do not commit easily, so creating a character that’s my polar opposite is an achievement that I still cherish to date.

    When did you start writing?

When I was nine, but I started exploring creative fiction when I was twelve. My Mom bought us books to read and she always had epic folk tales to tell us.

    First story you wrote?

Butterfly Gossips. It was this awesome novel I wrote about twins: Sasha and Tasha who fell in love with the same guy. I was in Form 2, for heaven’s sake and aside from the story, what I remember vividly was the poor art work! I leave sketching to those who wish to indulge.

Do you have a Writing Schedule? Like, do you write everyday or just when you feel like it?

I have a schedule and I also write when I feel like it.

The schedule is very important for long works of fiction, like if say, I am writing a book or an article. Sometimes, for blog posts, I write when I feel inspired to share something.

Do you want to be published?

I have self-published. For years, before I explored self-publishing, I reached out to many traditional publishers here in Kenya and the feedback was either negative or non-existent, but I’ve taken the path of self-publishing and I like it. So, I’ll stick to it for a while.

All done, and I’ll leave this to any writer who’d like to give it a go.

    Have a lovely weekend.

  • Friday: You see what you see, others see what you don’t

    August 17th, 2018

Diana did not attend the Friday morning briefing meeting. She had two reasons for her absence. One reason was valid while the other was majorly an excuse but she could not bring herself to admitting it, not even when she was summoned to the Director’s office later on before tea break.

She had learned two things in her short professional life; if she could be hired, she could be fired and that she had no friends at work.

Christina walked up to her during tea break, her vanilla scented perfume filling the room as her heels endlessly tapped the tiled floor.

“Hi Dee, so tell me, what is this I hear about the beef between you and Charles?”

    “What do you hear?”

“Rumor has it that you poured cold water on the guy asking him to cool down the “I am the Director’s cousin, card” that he’d been playing ever since he got here. So, is that why the boss summoned you into his office?”

    “No.”

“Okay and what’s with you and TDH at Accounts?”

“Sorry…what’s that? Is it a new software or something?”

“Aki I swear, you are slow sometimes Dee, I am talking about Mattoh, the tall, dark and very handsome Accounts Manager who never talks to anyone who is mathematically challenged like us minions. He suddenly asks to meet you and then you two take a drive out to talk budgets and suddenly he is smiling and chatting to people, in fact, talk of the devil…he’s just walked in.”

Diana looked in the direction her colleague was looking and saw Matthew walk in, when his eyes met hers, he smiled. Her mind drifted back to Diana’s description of the man, and she could see bits of the handsome, not the dark or her kind of tall, but he did know how to pick his shirts. She smiled back and waved him over.

She kept her eyes on him until he got to them and then she introduced him to Christina.

Her colleague giggled and excused herself.

    “How are you feeling?”

    “I’m feeling great and you?”

“Well, I’m good, your friend told us that you were unwell and that’s why you missed this morning’s meeting. I am glad to hear you are feeling better.”

    “Which friend?”

“The one you introduced me to right now.”

“Well, it’s great that she spoke for me.”

“She meant well, maybe, so what are you having?”

    “Green tea.”

    “What’s that?”

“It’s healthy tea, would you like to try it?”

“No thanks, I will stick to my drinking chocolate, maybe another time, I am not feeling adventurous this morning, there’s a pile of work that’s bugging me.”

“You’ll manage, you know your figures so that shouldn’t be a problem.”

“No, but it’s a Friday and I need to unwind, catch up with sleep and all that.”

    “I see.”

“Wait…what are you doing this weekend?”

“Sleeping…I am definitely sleeping. I will do some laundry and maybe go to the salon or market, but that’s just it, why?”

“There’s this place, I believe you’d love, I mean it’s all about art and creativity and the walls are colorful, maybe we could check it out, if you don’t mind.”

“It sounds like something I’d love, okay, sure, why not…but I hope you are not taking me to some dingy place.”

    “Define dingy.”

“See you then Matthew, now let me get back to my desk and wrap up my report.”

    “Yes, sure.”

  • Thursday: Drink some water, cool off

    August 16th, 2018

Two things were true about Diana as she sat opposite Matthew that afternoon; she was still reeling from her confrontation with Charles and she was hungry.

“So, do you always talk about people on phone?”

    “Why do you ask?”

“I heard your conversation. I would say that I know what I want and go after it, so bossy is a bit soft, if you were to describe me, then you could use ‘assertive’ it works well on CVs and is gender neutral.”

“Um…okay, well, you see…it’s, okay, look, I did not mean for it to come that way…”

“You were on phone and your tone was relaxed, so you definitely meant for it to come that way, why should you think otherwise?”

“I just don’t want to offend you.”

“It’s okay, you are entitled to your opinion and I don’t have to pay a subscription fee to it, so go ahead.”

    “Are you always like this?”

    “Like what?”

    “Ready to charge?”

“I’m in marketing, I guess, some things rub off on people, but it’s not just that, I had to confront someone and I am still a bit unsettled, however, let’s take a look at the file. Where will the driver be making his stop?”

“I’m meeting a few people at Laico.”

“Okay, we can look through this…”

Diana dipped her hand into her bag looking for her notebook. When she turned to Matthew, he was holding a bottle of water, directing it at her.

    “What’s that for?”

    “You need it.”

    “No, thanks.”

“Try it. You need to cool off and I know water is the only thing that does that, well, there may be others, but for the sake of professionalism, I’ll say, drink some water, cool off.”

  • Wednesday: No two people are the same

    August 15th, 2018

The first thing Diana did was walk to Charles and show him the file. He took a look at it and then said “Why are you showing me this?”

“Look at the file and tell me whether this is the budget I asked you to share with accounts.”

“I took the right file to them, so if it’s not what you requested, then ask those Math people, they should know what I sent them.”

    “Are you sure?”

“Yes, and what are you accusing me of Diana? It feels like you came here to fight me. So, what’s the problem?”

“There is no problem Charles. I wanted to confirm whether you did the right thing and you say you did, so I will ask the accountant to forward me the email you sent and the attachment and maybe we can resolve this misunderstanding. Let me be clear Charles, this is not our money- we are funded by people who expect us to manage their money wisely. If I find that this is another intentional screw-up, I will not be pleased. Think about that.”

“Are you threatening me? Do you know who I am?”

“You are Charles. You are neither God nor my purpose in life, so yes, I am making you know that I will not have you mess up my project by slacking off! If you came here to work, work! If you came here to gloat about your connections, then, go and advertise it on facebook! At this point, I don’t care anymore!”

    “This is harassment!”

“No Charles, this is a confrontation, it means I am done playing the diplomat! Now, I have to get back to Matthew and sort this mess. If you receive a memo from HR, know that I already lodged my complaint, utanibeba ujinga!”

Diana had to cool off after facing Charles so she made her way to the reception first before taking the stairs to the Accounts department.

When she got there, Matthew was talking on phone, and he had his back to her.

“I have to meet the Marketing and PR Lead before we head on out. She’s bossy, I tell you, but there’s nothing much I can do about it. No, nothing like that…it’s just different, working with someone who takes the lead before you ask her to.”

Diana stood by the door until he finished talking and then turned to see her standing there.

    “Oh, you are here!”

“Yes, I am, can we go through the budget now?”

“Shoot! Look at the time…how about we have a look at it on the way to the next meeting? The Company driver can always bring you back.”

“Okay, let’s go. I need to have this cleared by this evening.”

  • Tuesday: There are many versions of crazy

    August 14th, 2018

Diana took one look at that file and she knew Charles had to either lose a limb or get off her team. As Matthew went through each activity and the funds allocated, she couldn’t help but tap her left foot.

As he started working on the second phase of the project, she said “Look, there’s quite a lot missing from this file, how about I print out the right budget and we can look at it?”

    “What do you mean?”

    “Didn’t you hear a word I said?”

“I heard you, but I asked you what you meant. The two are very different.”

“We made amendments to the budget after talking to the client and I believe they were not factored into this file. I am sorry about the slight mix-up, I’ll have Charles bring you the file.”

“Thank you and we can look at it at around four in the evening.”

    “Why four?”

“I have two meetings to attend today and I would like a break from numbers. Do you have a deadline?”

    “Who doesn’t?”

“Okay…um, so when do you want us to go through this then?”

“I’m printing the document and we are taking a look at it now, when’s your meeting?”

    “In half an hour.”

“Let’s take a look and see what we can get done in that time.”

    “Sure.”

  • Monday: There is no such thing as romance

    August 13th, 2018

Diana hated two things about work: going to work and delays in salaries.

What could have been an early and brief meeting, turned out to be a complaints session. Duncan, the new HR Assistant, bore the brunt of it all. How could salaries delay by a week? Why couldn’t the Accounts team prepare everything before any of the signatories traveled abroad? Hadn’t they heard of electronic signatures or an electronic payroll software system?

Diana sipped her tea and tapped her feet. The first had nothing to do with the second, but they seemed to help her contain her fury.

She had exams and KNEC never understood salary delays.

There was the other feeling of walking into an ATM Lobby and coming out with a few wads of cash that made all the difference. Yes, there was also the Mshwari loan payment that was due in four days and she had worked so hard to get to the six thousand shillings limit!

She looked at her wrist watch, let out a sigh and then turned towards the door. The Director and a team were approaching. Setting aside her mug, she pulled out her notebook, set her phone on silent mode and sat up straight in her chair.

“Good morning everyone. I am sorry for keeping you waiting. There are a few things I would like to discuss with you, however, let me state that we understand the delay in salaries have inconvenienced you. We are truly sorry and Matthew, the Accounts Manager has some news to share, Matthew…”

“Yes, morning everyone, we are sorry and we sat down with the Director to resolve the issue and you will receive your salaries by noon today.”

Everyone went back to their duty stations an hour later and Diana was asked to see the Accounts Manager to resolve some issues in the Marketing and PR Budget she had submitted.

She turned towards Charles, but he was on his phone with one earpiece plugged in his right ear, either watching youtube videos or chatting on whatsapp. Killing him seemed the best option if she found out that he had failed to include any of her recommendations. It did not help that he was the Director’s cousin. Short, arrogant, a slacker and worst off…had the most annoying accessory any man of his status could own, a worn out maasai leather belt!

The other thing about Diana was that she never knocked on doors.

So, when Matthew turned to find her seated opposite him in his office, he couldn’t help but say “Hi, I didn’t hear you come in.”

    “I’m here as you requested.”

“Yes, well, we received your budget and there are some amendments that will have to be made. The account you expect to receive money from, has certain stipulations and that would largely affect when you get the money and how much you get.”

“Okay, so let’s have a look and see what we can do.”

    “Um…are you always this serious?”

“Money is a serious matter, especially when it’s not yours and you are tasked with putting it to good use.”

“Yes, it’s just that…forget that, let’s look at what you submitted.”

He handed the file over to her and smiled. Diana frowned then accepted the file and opened it to go through the details.

  • What’s in my bag

    August 11th, 2018

It’s been a while since I shared a fun post, but rest assured there’s no fun in digging into your bag to see what’s there.

I should probably add that I threw away the various receipts I had crumpled inside there, most of them coming from supermarkets.

    100_7805
Here’s my bag, I take it everywhere including to work, where a friend said I need some serious help! My sister bought it for me and I can’t resist it 🙂

    So, what’s in my bag:

    • A water bottle (Kisumu is always hot and inasmuch as it’s my kind of weather, being hydrated is important.)
    • Books (one is a novel I’m reading and the other is a writing book for all the ideas that come to mind.)
    • Pain killers (I picked this up being on the road, so I always have at least three or four tablets with me, just in case)
    • Coin purse and wallet
    • Pencil porch and stationery (highlighters, pencils, rulers and erasers are a must!)
    • Two varieties of lipgloss and the NIVEA Blackberry shine lipbalm.
    • Hand sanitizer, Body Splash, Hand cream.

    100_7808

There you have it, that’s what’s in my bag 🙂

    Have a lovely weekend.

  • The Unique Blogger Award

    August 9th, 2018

I just received this notification and being nominated for this award is awesome.Hey Briennaij, thank you for always giving me life by sharing your views on books. Y’all head on out to her blog and see what I mean by “giving me life”- Bri’s Book Nook.

    Rules:

    • Display the award!
    • Thank the person who nominated you, and post a link to their blog on your blog.
    • Answer the questions they’ve written for you!
    • Nominate 8-13 bloggers and give them three questions in the spirit of sharing love and solidarity within our blogging family!

    Bri’s Questions

What is the hardest part about blogging for you?

Right now, the hardest part is getting my domain and name servers synced.

What is the most inspiring character that you have met in a book, TV show, movie, or other creative media so far this year?

I’ve met quite a number of awesome characters. I was intrigued by Eddy in Prince of Mirrors by Robert Alan Clark. The author’s depiction of Eddy moved me so much through his struggles, brevity and how in a way he embraces Jem, and for some reason I felt like I was reading an Allan Hollinghurst novel.

The Prince of Mirrors by Alan Robert Clark

As for TV Shows, I will say that I am currently obsessed with Sanem played by Demet Ozdemir in Erkenci Kus (Early Bird), a Turkish telenovela.

    Erkenci Kus (2018)

What is your favorite artist/song/type of music to listen to while reading and/or blogging?

I listen to everyone, of late, working on the release of my next book has been so frustrating that somehow writing while One Direction’s Take Me Home album plays in the background seems to ground me.

Now, onto the nomination part, first, my three questions are:

    1. If your blog would be in a notebook or presented as a journal, what colors would you pick for the header, quotes and body text?
    2. What do you struggle with as a blogger?
    3. What are some of the most moving stories/books that you’ve read this year?

I’d love to hear what these unique bloggers have to say:

    Mike would be 32 today.

I just had my first downright unbothered customer service at KCB, and as I stepped out of that banking hall, I received a notification, a tweet from one of those astrology sites he might have subscribed to.

    Mike.

It’s the name he went by, but his real name still remains a mystery and I am certain had he graduated, all of us would have looked through that booklet and swore that he wasn’t listed. This happens in Kenya a lot, nicknames become real names and no one can escape the brand that comes with it.

What hurts is that for someone so cheerful, he would one day stop breathing and with his final bow, he never thought of saying goodbye. Who would?

When you are in pain, there’s nothing but pain, guess he understood that. He felt it.

So, his family laid him to rest…and unlike us, they felt the pain more than we could ever imagine, but even then, he was gone. He went to bed and never woke up. No one knew why, but his family knew how, and even as they spoke about it, his Old Man trembled…and he kept asking “Why couldn’t he talk to someone?” So, years went by and for a while I lived my life for what it was, until today.

It’s this never ending presence of “why” that has me asking questions that I may never get answers to, and years on, his cheerful presence is a reminder that bruises are always there and just because they aren’t visible, does not mean that they do not hurt.

Happy birthday Mike 🙂 ungekuwa tungeongea kuhusu samosa za Mama Rosie, ama Chipo Mayai pale Coast Dishes.

  • When a character takes over

    August 7th, 2018

    Dear Writers,

What do you do when a Character takes over your story?

    Do you

a). Think of ways of killing them?

b). Groan and shriek until your frustration oozes onto the paper?

c). Ask ‘Google,’ just to make sure that you are not losing your mind?

I started writing and had this lead character in mind but somehow he’s been usurped by a secondary character and now I cannot help but drink an extra cup of tea and wish I was on the road to Busia.

So, I tried to cast my writing aside, talked about my frustrations, read a book, watched an episode of Erkenci Kus, and had a piece of chocolate, all to no avail.

I ended up taking snippets of the story to create posts for Facebook, and ended up settling on this.

“You should not trust everything you hear from Sifuna. I know we are childhood friends. Trust me; I am grateful that you gave me a job when no one else was willing to. I also know that

There has to be something that I can do before giving in and seeing where the story will lead, until then, I will rack my brain and keep watching Erkenci Kus.
